Alonzo Emery

Alonzo is a Consultant with Triad Consulting Group and has taught negotiation and conflict management at Harvard for over a decade, including as a Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and as a Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School.  Their facilitation work focuses on increasing the capacity of individuals and organizations to navigate difficult conversations, including conversations on race, disability status, sexuality, and gender identity. 

Through their clinical and consulting practice, Alonzo has worked with business executives, lawyers, judges, civil society leaders, government officials, and educators to develop effective conflict management strategies and to engage in meaningful cross-cultural dialogue. Alonzo has led projects and workshops for HSBC, Salesforce, the U.S. Department of Justice, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, the Asian Development Bank, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and JSW Law School in the Kingdom of Bhutan, among many others.

Alonzo has taught in the executive education program at the Harvard Negotiation Institute and the Program on Negotiation’s Masterclass, helping leaders from around the world prepare to navigate complex negotiations.  From 2013 to 2016, they served as a Clinical Instructor in the Harvard Negotiation and Mediation Clinical Program where they managed clinical teams working on dispute systems design, consensus building, mediation, community dialogue, and facilitation projects. 

Alonzo speaks Mandarin and lived in China for a decade, serving as an Assistant Professor of Comparative Jurisprudence at Renmin University of China Law School from 2010 to 2013. During that time, they launched the Renmin University Disability Law Clinic, the first law school clinic in China dedicated exclusively to serving people with disabilities. As the former Associate Director of East Asian Legal Studies at Harvard Law School, Alonzo worked across departments and continents to create online and in-person platforms for international exchange. In recognition of their contributions to promoting transnational dialogue, the National Committee on US-China Relations named Alonzo to its Public Intellectuals Program in 2014. In addition to Renmin and Harvard, Alonzo has also taught at Georgetown University and UC Berkeley.

Alonzo received their B.A. from Yale University, cum laude, and their J.D. from Harvard Law School, magna cum laude. They have also studied at the University of Cape Town, Tsinghua University, Taiwan University, and Peking University. Before entering academia, they were a summer associate at the law offices of Davis Polk & Wardwell and Shearman & Sterling.  

When they are not traveling for their consulting work and teaching, Alonzo and their husband like to spend time with family back home in northern California and southern China.
